Things to See in Christchurch

 
A huge variety of attractions are available to experience in Christchurch. The town center is a historic part of the city, with churches, museums and century old houses and homesteads to visit and tour through. The massive expanse of parkland only minutes walk from the city center is called Hagley Park, it houses the Botanic Gardens, and several museums, as well as the homestead Mona Vale, and the Chateau on the Park. Within couple of hours of Christchurch are several of New Zealand’s finest snowfields, and for the keen hiker, there are numerous scenic walks through the areas surrounding Christchurch.

  • Christchurch Cathedral

    Cathedral Square, Christchurch, New Zealand

    A classic, gothic cathedral, located in the heart of the city, the Christchurch Cathedral is one of the city’s most visited attractions. Consecrated in 1881, its spire is 63m high, and has viewing platforms 30m from the ground. For $4 anyone can see the historical display, and climb the 133 steps to the viewing platform.

  • Botanic Gardens

    Off Rolleston Avenue, Christchurch, New Zealand

    Beautifully landscaped and spanning 30 hectares, the Botanic Gardens are typically English. Features include many floral houses, fern houses and the picturesque Avon River meandering through the park. The gardens are open from 7am until one hour before sunset.

  • Orana Park Wildlife Trust

    McLeans Island Road, Harewood, Christchurch, New Zealand

    The extensive grounds of this wildlife sanctuary contain an ‘African Plains’ exhibit, an excellent walk-through aviary of native birds, and a nocturnal kiwi house. It is open from 10am to 5pm daily, admission $12 adults, $6 children, and it is located only some 20 minutes from the city center.

  • Canterbury Museum

    Located at the entrance to the Botanical Gardens, Christchurch, New Zealand

    The Canterbury Museum is a fabulous museum with many interesting features including, early colonial exhibits, the Antarctic discovery center and the Maori gallery. A large selection of stuffed birds, including the extinct Moa, give the museum a very unique feel.
